prevailing wind picks up moisture from the sea as it travels over it, The moist air reaches the coast and is forced to rise up over mountains and hills, This forces the air to cool and condense into clouds, The air continues to be forced over mountains then it drops its moisture as rainfall, Once over the mountain the air drops down the other side, warming as it does so, As there are no clouds, there is little or no rain on the far side of the moutain, This area is called the rain shadow.
