command of a language, to know enough about the language to able to use it effectively, mind your language/tongue/manners, if you tell someone, especially a child, to control their language, control their tongue, or control their manners, you are telling them to speak or behave properly and politely., at cross purposes, people do not understand each other because they are talking about different subjects without realizing this, get/come to the point, to reach the main or most important idea of something that is said or written, talking shop, an organization or a place where discussion is the main activity, but no decisions or actions are taken, give a good talking to, To rebuke, scold, or berate someone thoroughly and intensely, run (something) by (one) one more time, To explain something to one or inform one about something one final time, make head or tail of something, to not be able to understand something at all, to say the least, used to show that what you are describing is in fact much more serious or important than you have suggested, get the wrong end of the stick, to not understand a situation correctly, not get a word in edgeways, to not be able to say anything because someone else is talking all the time.
