Perform hand hygiene, Wash or sanitize hands to reduce the risk of infection before touching any equipment or the patient., Put on gloves correctly, Wear clean gloves to protect yourself and prevent contamination., Identify the patient, Verify the patient’s full name and date of birth before starting the procedure., Apply the tourniquet properly, Place the elastic band above the venipuncture site to help make the vein more visible., Locate the median cubital vein, Gently palpate the inner elbow area to find the best vein for blood draw., Clean the site, Use an alcohol pad in a circular motion from the center outward and allow it to air dry., Insert needle at correct angle, Insert the needle at a 15–30° angle with the bevel facing up., Collect blood , Allow the collection tube to fill or gently pull the plunger to obtain the sample., Remove the tourniquet, Release the tourniquet once blood flow is established., Remove needle and apply pressure, Carefully remove the needle and immediately apply gauze with firm pressure., Dispose of needle in sharps container, Place the needle directly into the sharps container without recapping., Label specimen before leaving, Label the tube with patient information before leaving the room..
