Before the Triassic Period, many plants and animals lived and died, and their remains were left in layers of sediment., When animals died in the Jurassic Period, their bodies could be buried by sediment because soft parts rot away., In the Cretaceous Period, bones were compressed by layers of sediment, so minerals could dissolve into them and fossilise the remains., After many years, the bones became fossils, but fossils are rare because decay usually happens first., If animal droppings are buried and fossilise, they become coprolites, which give information about diet., When footprints are pressed into soft mud in the Ice Age, they can form imprints called ichnites., After the Stone Age, palaeontologists study fossils and remains because they show footprints from the past.
