1., The narrator finds a newspaper article about a mysterious ship and a survivor, Gustaf Johansen, with a strange idol., 2., Johansen’s ship was attacked by a strange cult-like crew, but his men defeated them and took control., 3., They discover a mysterious island that appears suddenly in the ocean., 4., Several crew members go ashore, and some of them die in a strange and terrifying way., 5., The narrator learns that Johansen has died mysteriously., 6., The narrator reads Johansen’s written account of what really happened., 7., The crew had found the sunken city of R’lyeh, risen from the sea., 8., They explore it and accidentally open a huge stone door., 9., Cthulhu is released and kills most of the crew., 10., Johansen escapes by ramming the ship into it., 11., The city sinks again, the dreams stop, and the narrator realizes Cthulhu still lives and may return.
