Moving day was sad. I had known about it for months., My mom got a new job across the country and we sold our house., We loaded our things into the moving van and set off for California., At first, we planned a week to get there., But Mom said we could each choose three places to visit along the way., We took out the map and decided what to see between New York and Los Angeles., My mom chose to stop and see Niagara Falls., She also wanted to see the arch in St. Louis, Missouri, and the Grand Canyon in Arizona., Me? I wanted to stop and see a Chicago Cubs game., I'm in Little League and my team is the Cubs., After that, I wanted to see Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota., My last stop was Dinosaur National Monument in Utah., We had a lot to look forward to., Our journey ended up taking ten days with all the zigzagging around., When we finally got to Los Angeles and unpacked, my mom said, "Everyone will come visit us now. There's so much to see here.", I hope she is right, but on the first day of school I made a new friend., Going to California, People have been moving to California for a long time!, It started with the Gold Rush in the mid-1800s., Miners went there to try and strike it rich in the goldfields., Other people went to California to start businesses or provide services to the miners., In the 1900s, California's population continued to grow., The fertile San Joaquin Valley of California became, and still is, one of the most important farming regions in the world., Industry, or the making of goods and services, is also well known in California., One of those industries is moviemaking., In the 1920s and '30s, Hollywood in Southern California became the film center of the world., Many movies were made there., Some of the movies showed the California lifestyle, which included sunny beaches, warm mountain hikes, and happy people at Disneyland., Those movies inspired even more people to move to California., The computer industry's boom started in the 1980s and '90s in an area south of San Francisco called Silicon Valley., It was named after the silicon chips used in computers., Today, California has a population of over 39 million people, making it the most populated state in the United States., A New Place to Call Home, The world has over 7 billion people living in it., Over 200 million of these people are called migrants., They have moved, or immigrated, to another country., Some people leave their homeland to find better jobs or a better education., Some people move to find better living conditions., Some people have to leave their home because of wars or lack of food., Many countries help these refugees., The countries that have the most people migrating to them are the United States, Russia, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Canada, and the United Kingdom., But sometimes countries decide not to allow many people to enter their country., Countries also have passport and visa requirements to get in., A passport is needed for a short trip such as a vacation., A visa is needed if a person has a job and needs to stay in the country for many years., Applying for a visa can include medical exams, vaccination forms, education, and other things to make sure an immigrating person is healthy and able to afford living in the country.
