Plants take in or absorb from the soil., 4, Bacteria on the plant roots turn the nitrogen into ammonia., 5, Bacteria in the soil change ammonia into nitrites and then nitrates which are two substances that contain nitrogen., 6, Plants absorb nitrates from the soil to grow. Animals get the nitrogen from the nitrates in plants., 7, Nitrates from animal waste and decayed plants return to the soil and bacteria turn this back into nitrogen gas., 8, Nitrogen gas is returned to the atmosphere and the nitrogen cycle continues.
