to incentivize workers, to encourage employees to work harder by offering rewards, to dull thinking, to make thinking less clear or less sharp, to hold somebody accountable, to make someone responsible for their actions, to have a sense of autonomy, to feel independent and in control of your own decisions, to do more than you have to, to go beyond what is required, it keeps me going, it gives me motivation or energy to continue, to have the courage to speak up, to be brave enough to express your opinion, resign / hand in the resignation, to formally leave your job, make redundant, to dismiss an employee because their job is no longer needed, come through the ranks, to rise to a higher position starting from a lower one, shuffle up the ladder, to move up in a company, often slowly or informally, throw you in at the deep end, to make someone start a difficult job without preparation, to deal with, to take action in order to handle a situation or problem, eager to learn, very interested in gaining knowledge or skills, underperform, to perform worse than expected.
