SALUTE - also known as SPOT or SALTR report. It is a form patrols fill in, WHAT- tactical intelligence gathered for your command - essential information, WHO - reconnaissance patrols, WHERE - near enemy lines, HOW - a standardized, structured brief method. Written in capital letters, WHAT ABOUT - enemy forces , WHY IMPORTANT - it reduces miscommunication. It helps commanders quickly assess situations and make informed decisions., WHAT PARTS - Size, Activity, Location, Unit, Time, Equipment , SIZE - number of personnel, vehicles, aircraft. Example: 7 ENEMY SOLDIERS, ACTIVITY - what is the enemy doing, which direction is he moving in. Be specific! Example: TRAVELLING SW, CROSSED ROAD JUNCTION ON BLACK RIDGE, LOCATION - grid coordinates, altitude, landmarks. Example: ROAD JUNCTION ON BLACK RIDGE, UNIT - are they military personnel/ civilians/ a known organization? Do they have any specific uniforms/ insignia? Example: WEARING GREEN UNSPECIFIED UNIFORMS, TIME - at the time of observing the area. Example: OBSERVED 20020106 at 1545, EQUIPMENT- weapons, vehicles, communication devices. Be specific! Example: Possessing small arms (rifles); one civilian pickup truck, extra info - REQUEST/ REMARKS - what is needed and other important info- terrain, weather.
