The Ukrainian pupils’ studying is conducted at national schools, lyceums and gymnasiums, where children get deep knowledge in different subjects., Every school decides how many school days it has – five or six each week., The day starts at 8 or 9 a.m., and one lesson lasts for 45 minutes., Between the lessons there are some ten- or fifteen-minute breaks, during which students can have a bite, rest, communicate, share the news or get ready for the next class., The majority of schools teach in Ukrainian., There are 12 years of compulsory education and two main stages: elementary school and secondary school., The first stage is elementary school which lasts 4 years., It teaches pupils basic skills in Mathematics, Languages, Art, Natural Science, Physical Training and several other subjects., So, after finishing it, pupils master the knowledge of the main rules of reading and writing in Ukrainian and one foreign language, moreover, they learn how to count without any calculator, draw, etc., The pupils study there from the first till the fourth form and are usually taught by one teacher in the majority of subjects except Art, Physical Training and Music., Quite frequently after-school classes pupils can stay at school in an extended-day school group till 5 o’clock p.m., There pupils, under the control of the educator, do their homework, have lunch and develop other different skills, e.g. embroidering, drawing, knitting, sewing etc., The second stage lasts 8 years and provides deeper knowledge and skills in science and humanities subjects, such as Physics, Algebra, Geometry, Literature, etc., After successful completion of the basic and higher secondary education, the pupils have to pass the final examinations and receive certificates of general secondary education., Each subject is taught by a different teacher., Studying at the second stage requires more discipline and self-organization from pupils in order to distribute time in the right way and to manage to do all the home tasks in time., The Ukrainian students are marked according to the 12-grade system., At each class pupils not only listen to the teacher’s explanations, but also answer his questions and present information which has been prepared by them at home., After every lesson students get marks in their record books and class register., The points can vary from excellent (12, 11, 10) to poor (1, 2, 3)., If a pupil is always at the bottom of his class, misses classes and fails the exams, he can be expelled from school., And vice versa, if it is a top-of-the-class student, he will have an opportunity to finish school with Honors., So, the national educational process is a complex system which enables pupils to get necessary knowledge and useful skills.
