G1 Phase, The cell grows, carries out normal cellular functions, and produces proteins and organelles needed for DNA replication., S Phase, DNA is replicated. Each chromosome is copied, producing two sister chromatids joined together., G2 Phase, The cell continues to grow and prepares for mitosis. Proteins needed for cell division are produced, and the cell checks that DNA replication was completed correctly., M (Mitotic) Phase, consists of mitosis (division of the nucleus) and cytokinesis (division of the cytoplasm)., Prophase, Chromatin condenses into visible chromosomes, the mitotic spindle begins forming, and the chromosomes become prepared for movement., Prometaphase, The nuclear envelope breaks down, and spindle microtubules attach to chromosomes at their kinetochores., Metaphase, Chromosomes line up along the middle/equator of the cell. Each sister chromatid is attached to spindle fibers from opposite poles., Anaphase, Sister chromatids separate and are pulled toward opposite poles of the cell., Telophase, Chromosomes arrive at opposite poles and begin to decondense. New nuclear envelopes form around each set of chromosomes., Cytokinesis, The cytoplasm divides, producing two daughter cells., G₀ phase, A state in which a cell exits the active cell cycle and is not preparing to divide. Some cells can reenter the cycle if conditions are favorable
