My class is very difficult to get started at the beginning of a lesson. They are noisy and unsettled every week, and won't concentrate on what I say. I think it's because they have Mr Jones just before. - Don't use teacher talk at the start of the lesson. Give them something to do and go round firefighting, praising and settling them. , The class are reasonably OK when they are doing written work activities, but as soon as they start a practical activity they go barmy. - Talk to the class about it, and ask for their cooperation; it sounds as though they enjoy the practicals. Plan activities with great care, and threaten not to use friendship groups. Open a really interesting practical by threatening to withdraw it if they are noisy. Firefight at the start of the practical, praising individual groups for sensible behaviour. , I was telling a girl off for being late when there was a comment I didn't hear from someone in the class, and she then collapsed into a fit of giggles. - Never start a battle you may not win. Tell her you will see her after the class, and to settle down, then do your best to ignore her. ,
