The movie is based on a play based on real events, True!, The women who inspired Roxie and Velma committed the same crimes - killing a lover and killing a husband and a sister, False, Belva (Velma) only killed her lover, but they needed the conflict with “I can’t do it alone” for Velma and Roxie to end up in a double act, In 1920s almost 200 women in Cook County, Illinois were accused of killing their lovers/husbands, True, 186 women, actually, Out of them, 60 were found guilty, False, only 24 were convicted and only 12 of them served a life sentence, Back then women knew they could get away with their crimes, so they killed for a fleeting moment of fame., False (I guess?), there’s no registered evidence that it’s true but who knows, Recall a few major events that took place in the USA back then which could explain such injustices of the justice system, the 18th Amendment (prohibition, or the dry law), the 19th amendment (white women getting the right to vote), post WWI society, immigration, industrialisation.
