A thermal decomposition reaction is when a compound is broken up into products when heated. For example: Copper Carbonate -> Copper Oxide + Carbon Dioxide You can see from the suffix "-ate" that the compound contains oxygen as well as the copper and carbon. All three of these elements are still present in the separated products: CuCO3 ⟶ ____ + ____ Calcium Carbonate -> ____ + ____ CaCO3 -> ____ + ____ ____ Carbonate → Magnesium Oxide + ____ Dioxide MgCO₃ → MgO + ____ Make sure you have all the elements on both sides of your equation! Zinc ____ -> Zinc Oxide + Carbon Dioxide ____ -> ZnO + CO2 Copper Carbonate -> ____ + ____ ____ ⟶ ____ + CO2
