In English the main parts of speech are noun, pronoun, adjective, determiner, verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection., Nouns - a word (other than a pronoun) used to identify any of a class of people, places, or things ( common noun ), or to name a particular one of these ( proper noun )., Verbs - a word used to describe an action, state, or occurrence, and forming the main part of the predicate of a sentence, such as hear, become, happen., Pronouns - a word that can function by itself as a noun phrase and that refers either to the participants in the discourse (e.g., I, you ) or to someone or something mentioned elsewhere in the discourse (e.g., she, it, this )., Literary Genres - may be determined by literary technique, tone, content, or even (as in the case of fiction) length. They generally move from more abstract, encompassing classes, which are then further sub-divided into more concrete distinctions., Adjectives - a word or phrase naming an attribute, added to or grammatically related to a noun to modify or describe it., Phrases - a small group of words standing together as a conceptual unit, typically forming a component of a clause., Clauses - a unit of grammatical organization next below the sentence in rank and in traditional grammar said to consist of a subject and predicate., Independent Clause - is a group of words that contains a subject and verb and expresses a complete thought., Dependent Clause - is a group of words that contains a subject and verb but does not express a complete thought., Run On Sentences - occurs when two or more independent clauses (also known as complete sentences) are connected improperly., Hyphens - the sign -, used to join words to indicate that they have a combined meaning or that they are linked in the grammar of a sentence, Colons - used in various technical and formulaic contexts, for example a statement of proportion between two numbers, or to separate hours from minutes, Semicolons  - indicating a pause, typically between two main clauses, that is more pronounced than that indicated by a comma., Question Marks - indicating a question.,
