Respiration - the process by which a body gets and uses oxygen and releases carbon dioxide and water, Cellular Respiration - involves chemical reactions that release energy from food; the energy is stored in molecules of glucose, Respiratory System - breathing is made possible by this system and is made up of the nose, throat, lungs, and passageways that lead to the lungs, Nose - main passageway of the respiratory system, Pharynx - the passage from the mouth to the larynx and esophagus, Branches of the Pharynx - one tube leads to the esophagus into the stomach, one tube leads to the larynx which leads to the lungs , Larynx - the area of the throat that contains the vocal cords and produces vocal sounds, Vocal Cords - a pair of elastic bands that stretch across the larynx; when air flows between these they vibrate , Trachea - the tube that connects the larynx to the lungs, Branches of the Trachea - this splits into two branches called the bronchi, one bronchus connects to each lung, Alveoli - any of the tiny air sacs of the lungs where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged, Diaphragm - a dome-shaped muscle beneath the lungs; when you inhale the diaphragm contracts and moves down, Inhale - when you do this, you take in oxygen; this oxygen diffuses into red blood cells and is carried to tissue cells, Carbon Dioxide and Water - when cells use oxygen to release chemical energy these are produced, Examples of Respiratory Disorders - asthma, emphysema, and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Asthma - causes the bronchioles to narrow; a person with this has difficulty breathing and may be triggered by dust or pollen, SARS - it is caused by a virus; a person with this may have a fever and difficulty breathing, Emphysema - this occurs when the alveoli have been damaged, people with this may have trouble getting the oxygen they need, One Job of the Lungs - have an important job in respiration by helping to take oxygen from the air we breathe and putting it into your blood , Additional Job of the Lungs - they help remove carbon dioxide from the body, Glucose - Blood sugar, or __________, comes from the food you eat, and is your body's main source of energy, Diffusion or Gas Exchange - based on the principle that gases tend to move from areas of higher concentration to lower concentration ,
