Many female slaves self aborted pregnancies to avoid bringing more children into slavery 4. The death rate was very high, due to overwork on from diseases such as dysentery and yellow fever, Why were profits so high from the slave trade - 1. Ships made a profit selling or trading goods at every stage of the triangle. 2 Slaves would cost around £12 but could be sold for £60 making a profit 3. Slave produced goods such as tobacco, sugar and cotton which were sold in Britain were in demand and sold for a high sum of money 4. Slaves could be packed tightly in the middle passage, unable to lie on their back, this meant a larger number of slaves to sell, Describe the way that Britain profited from the slave trade - 1. The finance industry grew, as merchants needed loans to finance their journey and invest their profits 2. Consumers were able to get goods which were in demand such as sugar and tobacco far cheaper than if slaves hadn't been used 3. Wealthy merchants invested money made from slave trade profits to build parks and £16 million was given to Glasgow Uni 4.  Many jobs were created and depended on the slave trade : shipbuilding, factories producing goods such as glass beads to sell, jobs in cotton mills manufacturing slave produced cotton, Describe the way in which British ports were impacted by the slave trade - 1. Huge number of jobs created for example in shipyards 2. Increase in population as people flocked to work there, Liverpool grew from 5,000 to 78,000 in the 1800s and became the 2nd city of the Empire 3. Ports towns involved in the slave trade became very wealthy such as Liverpool. Rich merchants invested in large houses in Liverpool. 4.  Glasgow primarily imported slave produced tobacco and became wealthy through manufacturing and selling this on.,
