A - 1st - Prevailing wind is South-West, material is carried eastwards by longshore drift., B - 2nd - Coastline changes direction, sand and shingle are deposited in water which is sheltered by the headland., C - 3rd - Deposited material builds upwards and outwards forming a spit., D - 4th - Sometimes wind may change direction, south-east perhaps, so some material is pushed inland causing the end of spit to curve., E - 5th - Wind returns to usual direction of south-west, spit continues to grow eastwards., F - 6th - Further hooked ends develop when the wind changes direction at times., G -7th - Spits become permanent when wind picks up sand and blows it inland forming sand dunes and salt marshes., H -8th - Spit cannot grow across the estuary due to the speed of river carrying material out to sea.,
