FIRST DEGREE: Superficial, Involves epidermis (intact), Reddened, blanches with pressure, Tingling, Itching, Pain, Hyperesthesia , Recovery takes a few days., Examples are sunburn & superficial scald burns, SECOND DEGREE: Partial Thickness. Involves the epidermis & portion of the dermis , Hair follicles & Skin appendages are intact, Blistered, mottled, red, moist base , Painful and Sensitive to air currents, Recovery takes 2-3 weeks. , Scarring & depigmentation are possible. Grafting is possibly needed, Examples are scalds, flash flames, THIRD DEGREE: Full Thickness. Involves epidermis, dermis, & underlying connective tissue, Leathery & dry, the color can be white, red, brown, or charred, Deeply burned areas lack sensation, Edema is present, and coagulated vessels may be visible, Grafting is needed. Eschar may slough scarring. , Examples are flames, electric currents, chemicals, and prolonged exposure to hot liquids. , FOURTH DEGREE: Full thickness, deep burn necrosis into tissue, muscle, or bone, Wound is charred, The patient may experience shock, myoglobinuria, hemolysis, Amputation is likely , Grafting provides no benefit, given the depth & severity, Examples are prolonged exposure or high-voltage electrical injuries. ,
