Martin Luther - began the protestant reformation with the 95 theses. throughjt the church was corrupt , Martin Luther's reasoning - thoughts salvation came through gods grace and not through the good works the church demanded, St. Peter and St. Paul - formed christian denominations. established in rome as a centre of christanity. put to death as martrys, the great Schism of 1054 - christianity in the east and west developed difference. many key issues over time led to the split. there have been many attempts to realign these sides but have failed throughout history. a few eastern churches have become Eastern Rite Catholic Churches meaning even though they are geographically located in the east they follow the fundamentals of the west. factors that cause the split are icons, language, Filioque clause, and authority.  , Roman Catholics vs the protestant reformation - this threat challegened roman catholicism. martin luther thought the church was corrupt and wanted to change it. main focus was indulgencies; paying money to get to leave purgatory quicker and get to heaven. biblical authority superior to tradition or the pope. national languages used rather than latin. , east leader - Bartholomew 1; the patriarch of the greek orthodox church, west leader - pope francis; head of the roman catholic church , autocephalous - appointing its own head, not subject to the authority of an external patriarch or archbishop., autonomous - having the freedom to govern itself or control its own affairs., 5 Eastern Rite Catholics  - Alexanrian traditions, Antiochian traditions, Armenian traditions, Chaldean traditions, and Byzantine traditions, icthus  - greek work for fish, an acronym that means jesus christ, son of god, saviour. early christian identified themselves with this symbol because the religion was still a secret at this time, INRI - latin inscriptions over the cross. means jesus of Nazereth, king of the jews. , chi rho  - the first two letters of christ superimposed upon one another , linked circles - stand for the unity of god through father, son, and the holy spirit, dove of peace - symbolizes the spirit of God at jesus' baptism , palm leaves  - symbolic of palm sunday. they were laid at jesus' feet to signify his triumphant entry in jerusalem. the people were shouting "hosanna" which means "save now" , crown of thorns - symbolism of christs suffering on the cross , scallop shell - the pilgrimage symbol for St. James of compostella who was an apostle of Jesus. he brought is with him and used it like an offering plate, tongues of flames - after jesus ascended into heaven during the pentecost the holy spirit came in the form of fire to the apostles and mary. pentecost is 50 days after easter. considering the beginning of the catholic church, lamb of god  - john the baptists description of jesus. the passover lamb , cross keys  - symbolize the keys to heaven , alpha and omega  - first and last letter of the greek alphabet they represent the beginning and the end meaning god is all, sacraments of initiation - baptism, confirmation, eucharist , sacraments of healing - reconciliation, anionting the sick , sacraments of service - marriage/ matrimony, holy orders , jesus's two greatest commandments - love the lord your god with all your heart, all of your soul, ll of your mind and all of your strength. love your neighbour as yourself. , contemplative meditation - reading and reflecitng on the bible. mystical religious experience to bring you closer to god , the paschal mystery  - one of the central concepts of christian faith relating to the history of salvation. its main subject is the passion, death, and ressurection of jesus christ,
