1 - On Easter Day 1722, Dutch explorers landed on Easter Island., 2 - As soon as they landed on the island they were amazed to find that it was dotted with hundreds of huge stone statues.There are 5 basic materials., 3 - For centuries the population of the island was 12,000., 4 - In 300 years the population went down to 111 people., 5 - Scientists have found out that the people of Easter Island came from Polynesia by boat., 6 - The stones are the believed to be the 'living face of the ancestors' and had once had eyes. The statues were protecting the people, part of a Polynesian tradition of ancestor worship., 7 - The island was once covered in palm trees which the islanders used for fire wood and to build boats and canoes., 8 - When the trees were cut down, the soil got washed away and the people could no longer grow crops on the island., 9 - Some scientists believe that food was so scarce the islanders started eating each other., 10 - The island is 22km by 11km. (The same size as Jersey)., 11 - At its peak society flourished and the people farmed the island and also fished., 12 - The hundreds of stone statues called Moai represent the success of the islands inhabitants., 13 - There are around 900 statues which scientists think were pushed to the edges of the island on log rollers., 14 - Some of the stones weighed twice the amount of the stones at Stonehenge., 15 - All of a sudden things changed on the Island. Carvings were found of starving people. There was no more birdlife to eat. The people cut down the last tree on the Island. The islanders could no longer go fishing., 16 - A land of plenty had become desperately short of food. Had the population overexploited natural resources?, 17 - The final problem-explorers visiting the island brought different diseases with them., 18 - Small pox wiped out the remaining people. The isolated islanders could not fight off the germs from other places.,
